The American Heritage game of Skirmish refers to the Revolution of 1775 to 1777. Players command the British or American Armies. The game board shows a map of Eastern America from below Charleston South Carolina in the south to above Boston Massachusetts in the north and inland to Montreal Canada, Philadelphia and Virginia.

The accompanying booklet provides a fascinating and absorbing background that sets the scene perfectly. Produced in 1975 to mark the bicentennial celebration of the War of Independence, the game is part of the American Heritage series of thoughtfully designed games from the 1960s and 1970s. All feature fantastic artwork on the box cover and well designed playing pieces. View a list of American Heritage MB Games.

The British Army are more powerful at first but lack mobility. It has greater sea power and can use the coastal ports to move. Strategically, best to engage early; divide and conquer, clean up small militia units and engage the Continental Army.
The American Army is weaker at first but more mobile. The small units have the advantage in skirmishes. Strategically, best to avoid major battles (especially the Continental Army) and wear down the British with skirmishes. Aim to build up armies to full strength before engaging.

The war extended beyond the confines of the game board but this area was the major factor in achieving independence.  After 1778 fighting extended from the West Indies to India. England itself was in danger of invasion. In America, the war extended west of the Appalachians and continued in many areas long after the peace treaty with England was signed.
