| The 3 ranks (rows) furthest from each player are the promotion zone where a piece is turned over, revealing a different symbol. Gold and King pieces cannot be promoted. Playing pieces are flat and pointed and players use pieces of the same colour, distinguished by which direction they point. The last 4 gallery images show promotion symbols. The Shogi Association is the official body for all players outside Japan and is a branch of the Nihon Shogi Renmei. |
