A rare early edition.
Scrabble was first launched in Connecticut US, 1949. Demand soared and production switched to the more established firm Selchow & Righter in 1953. By the end of 1953, the game was being made in Europe initially by J. Schowanek Co. of Piding, Bavaria.

UK production started in 1954. The early UK editions of the game also featured wood tiles and tile racks. The plain burgundy colour outer box with a round Spear's Games sticker in the top left corner remained in use until 1959. In 1960, the box design changed to the modern recognised style of green box with large capital lettering across the box printed in white on a red block background. From 1958, plastic tiles were used instead of wood on all standard editions. Plastic tile racks were used from 1983.
