180 x white stones
1 x rules and instructions booklet, 20 pages

GO is a fighting game. The board represents the uninhabited world bound on all sides by the seashore.
Vertical lines marked ‘a’ to ‘t’, and horizontal lines 1 to 19 form 361 intersections (points).
Take turns to place stones on the board and fight for territory;
- surround areas to claim territory
- attack your opponent and/or take prisoners by enclosing an opponent's stone

When players agree that no more points can be made, the game finishes.
Calculate the score, (points enclosed – points lost). The player with most points, wins.

Beginners may play on 10 x 10 lines on the reverse of the board. A handicap system is used between players of differing ability.

Illustrations, a sample game, and information on The British GO Association are found in the booklet.
The game is thought to have originated in China over 4,000 years ago as Yi, later changed to Wei chi (the surrounding game). First mentioned  in literature by Confucius, 500 BC and seen in Japan from about 700 AD, where it is considered their national game. GO players are graded according to their playing strength similar to that used for judo, emphasising conflict;
- Kyu or junior grade to progress to 1st Kyu
- Dan grades progress from 1st to 9th.
