Each player represents one of the great powers of Europe in the years just prior to World War 1; England , Germany , Russia , Turkey , Austria-Hungary , Italy and France.

At the start of the game, the players draw lots to represent each power. This is the only element of chance in the game. The first great power to control 18 supply centres controls Europe and is the winner.

A realistic game of strategy, pitting one person against another in an exciting battle of wits. Agreements between players affect the course of the game. These are determined during the diplomacy period which takes place before each move. The conversations usually consist of bargaining or joint military planning but they may include such things as exchanging information, denouncing, threatening or spreading rumours. A player does not have to be honest; deciding whom to trust as situations arise is part of the game!

Game play can last for hours. If you are looking for a game of strategy, planning and negotiation which taxes the brain then this is for you. There are a number of editions / print runs of the game since its launch in 1961, although the game play is exactly the same.

Quoted from the 1963 introduction;
"Diplomacy is no game for handsome nit-wits" Katherine Whitehorn, Observer 25/11/1962.
"The rules of Diplomacy are logical and, if properly interpreted, not in any way ambiguous. But Diplomacy is a game that requires intelligence, and we strongly advise you to read the RULES through carefully before commencing to play." (!)
